Be Strong and Courageous!

Have you ever doubted yourself? Have you ever questioned God’s calling on your life? Have you ever thought you weren’t qualified for the position God placed you in? Me too sister. It’s in our human nature to instantly become doubtful and fearful when stepping into a new role. We all tend to walk into new things anxiously. I don’t think anyone is born with confidence oozing out of their ears. So, don’t think that you are alone in feeling unqualified or unprepared for whatever the new venture in your life may be.

Let’s talk about the life of Joshua for a second. He too found himself in a new position of responsibility. He was the successor to Moses, a spiritual giant in the eyes of the Israelites who delivered the children of Israel from the slavery in Egypt. After Moses’ death, Joshua had to step into the new role of leadership. God immediately told him to ready the children of Israel to enter into the Promise Land.

I can only imagine what was going through Joshua’s mind. I think he immediately began to doubt himself because it is mentioned four times in Joshua 1 where God tells Joshua, “…be strong and courageous.” Joshua never communicated doubt or fear to God in response of what He was asking him to do, but God knew his heart. God repeatedly told Joshua to be strong and courageous because those were the exact words Joshua needed to hear replaying in his mind. God provided Joshua with the encouragement He knew he needed.

God’s words were not a suggestion or optional advice. His words were a command backed by the promise that “…the Lord they God will be with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:9)

So whatever new role you maybe stepping into or maybe you are already in a role but just don’t feel qualified to fulfill it, I challenge you to change your perspective. Embrace your new or present role clinging to the words “be strong and courageous.” You will discover that when you repeat God’s encouragement, you will find confidence in God. Whether you’re a new mom trying to adjust to the demands of motherhood, facing an unexpected illness, starting over in life or just trying to face each day’s tasks, in each of us God wants to place the same encouragement in our hearts, “…be strong and courageous.”

So today I thank God for the promise that He will be with me wherever I go. When doubt and fear try to creep into my spirit, I just remember that I am not alone and God has already equipped me with everything I need to fulfil the role I need to in life. I need only to be strong and courageous.

 Encouragement:

Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Deuteronomy 31:6

When I am afraid, I will trust in you. In God, whose word I praise, in God I trust; I will not be afraid… Psalm 56:3-4

For I am the Lord thy God, who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, do not fear; I will help you. Isaiah 41:13

Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous hand. Isaiah 41:10
