 Identity

Identity: the characteristic determining who or what a person or thing is. May I dare to ask the question today who do you believe yourself to be? If I asked you to describe yourself in a few words, what would you say? If I asked you to identify yourself, what would you say?

Every morning you wake up and look at yourself in the mirror who do you see? How do you feel? I hate to start off today asking so many questions, but in today’s society knowing who we are is one of the most important questions we need to answer. In a society that faces an identity crisis already, the children of God must not get lost in the crisis our self. We must not forget who we are.

Now I know that most of us aren’t everything we always wanted to be and what we dreamed of being. I can understand that some of us feel as if we have fell short in achieving our goals and dreams. There may even be some today that feel like failures, but today I am here to remind you that you are more than what or who you say you are! You are not a failure, you are not behind, you are not a mess up, but you are a child of the one true KING! You have a purpose and God has a plan for you! Jeremiah 1:5 says “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart.” Before we were ever born in this world, God knew us and had a plan for us. He knew who we would be, what we would do, and what we would become!! Don’t neglect who you are right now or where you are at in life, or what mistakes you have made because God is molding you into what he has for you to be!

Take the butterflies for instant. They don’t start as a that colorful beautiful creature. It first was a caterpillar, then he went through metamorphous and came out as a butterfly.  The beautiful handmade pottery that we buy off the shelves didn’t just one day appear there. It first was a piece of ugly wet clay that was molded, pressed, and crafted into the beautiful piece it is. We love to identify these things as what we know them to be now, but we forget the process it took for them to get there. It is the same way with you, child of God. We see ourselves as what we are now and not what God is molding us to be.  No matter where you are in your walk with God, don’t belittle your identity! Identify yourself as a child of God! Identify yourself as beautiful because you are made in His image. Identify yourself as prosperous because with God all things are possible! Identify yourself as strong because through Christ you are made strong.

Be patient but don’t be ashamed of who you are. God has so many plans for you but you must be patient. Men and women in the Bible dealt with this too. Joseph was in a pit because of who he said he would be, but one day he would identify himself second behind pharaoh in Egypt! Saul was persecuting Christians, but God changed his identity to Paul and he would instead save the same Christians he persecuted. Jacob wrestled with the angel until God had to knock his hip out of socket and change his name to Israel where he would carry his new identity forever.

Child of God be patient, because God is still working on you! God is still molding you. God is still crafting you into what he wants you to be. So today, when you look at yourself in the mirror identify yourself as a child of God, loved by the King. Identity yourself as everything God has already instilled within you. Know that you are beautiful, smart, strong, courageous, and mighty through Christ. Don’t be someone or something that you aren’t because God has a plan for you!

 Encouragement:

For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

Jeremiah 29:11

Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.

Jeremiah 1:5

But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.

I Peter 2:9
